Clinton Hill rose to prominence around the 1840s when it was a suburb on the edges of the city. Later in the 19th century, rowhouses joined the freestanding mansions. This neighborhood takes its name from the area’s stately elevation (95 feet). Clinton Avenue is the most spectacular street of the historic district (which faces the Fort Greene Historic District, across Vanderbilt Avenue). Pratt institute lies in Clinton Hill, as a leafy collegiate corner of the neighborhood. This elevated town with its fresh college feel offers a picturesque urban destination that summons the grandiosity of the past.
